2016.8.4

Some people think that computers and the Internet are more important to a child's education than going to school. However, others believe that schools and teachers are essential for children to learn effectively. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

In the past, the main role of the teacher was to provide information. Today, however, students can get access to a wide range of information. Therefore, some people think there is no role for the teacher in the modern education. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (2017/3/25)

Nowadays it is not uncommon to see a teacher lecturing laboriously with some students fixing their eyes on their laptop screen or smartphone and others sleeping. The reasons for this pathetic situation are varied臭桂鱼的做法 , one important being that, with more sources of information at hand, students do not have to rely on their teachers as much as before for things they want to know. While this is certainly true in a sense, I still hold that the teacher does have a role to play in modern education.
In the first place, Internet, along with other similar non-human sources, is far from perfect as a source of information and knowledge. For one thing, information on Internet may be unreliable, or even incorrect. A friend of mine recently got into serious trouble because she obtained an article from Internet and gave it to her supervisor, only to find later that the article was about Australia, rather than Austria as she had originally expected. For another, knowledge from the Internet is often incomplete and fragmented, but what students need is really something more systematic so that they can obtain a comprehensive picture of an academic field. A student who mainly depends on the Internet for knowledge may end up a Jack of all trades but master of none.
But even if the Internet and other similar sources provide information as accurate and systematic as the teacher does in class, I still do not agree that they can supersede the classroom teaching. After all, going to school is not just about obtaining information. It is more of an experience. Compared with the “cold” and “indifferent” Internet, the communication with teachers in classroom often carries a tinge of human warmth and that personal feeling is sometimes even more important than the knowledge itself and becomes part of our memory of school life.
So, in terms of knowledge-based education, the Internet and other sources do facilitate our access to information (though sometimes inaccurate and incomplete), yet when it comes to experience-based education, which I think is more essential, there is always an important role for the teacher to play.

In the past, knowledge was stored in books, but now it is stored in the Internet. Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages (2017/3/30)
Printed books are not necessary in digital era because books can be stored electronically, while others believe that printed books will continue to play an important part in our lives. Give your own opinion based on your experience.

Today we all believe that knowledge is just at the tip of our fingers because all knowledge seems to be have been stored electronically and is easily accessible on the Internet. There have been mixed responses to this development, and personally I think more and more people will rely on the Internet for knowledge though the printed books will never completely disappear.
Storing knowledge in the Internet has obvious advantages. Owing to its virtually unlimited capacity, the Internet can store all knowledge in the world. This makes it quite unnecessary for us to spend that much money constructing the brick-and-mortar libraries. Then as long as we have Internet connection, we can find whatever we desire to know no matter where we are. So, rather than carrying heavy books on American culture with me, I can sit at a coffee table and with a few simple keyboard clicks, I can have immediate access to any book in the world on that topic. What is more, if I would like to share some important knowledge with my friend, again a few simple clicks would dowintc, but were the knowledge stored in the book form, then I would probably have to find time to go to the post-office and send the book to him/her, which is far more time-consuming and less efficient.
Keeping knowledge in the Internet, however, will make us excessively dependent on electronic devices. Simply put, in case of power-off or computer break-down, we will be thrown into a terribly helpless situation. But this is not a problem for people who learn things from books. Additionally, many people simply prefer reading real books for knowledge to online sources, because they believe books are more reliable and they find themselves emotionally and intellectually more attached to knowledge in books.
My conclusion, then, is that knowledge will increasingly find its way to the Internet and it will make knowledge storage more economical and convenient, yet books will never vanish because there are always people who would like to embrace knowledge in printed form.

It is not necessary to travel to other places to learn about culture and people, because people can learn from books, films or the Internet. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (2017/10/05)
Travel is commonly perceived as a good approach to the traditional customs and exotic cultures of other countries or regions. However, some people are suspicious of the necessity of travel as we can learn about other cultures by reading books, watching films and browsing the Internet, which seem cheaper, less time-consuming and more accessible. In my view, although these methods can help us get some general ideas, a full understanding of the local culture can only be obtained through travelling in person.
Firstly, cultural items acquired from books, movies or the Internet only show the opinions or attitudes of a certain group of people, who in some circumstances may convey wrong messages and cause cultural misunderstanding and discrimination. For example, in some books or movies British people often appear a bit conservative, sophisticated and indifferent, but when we travel to the United Kingdom枫香寄生 , we’ll find many people there friendly, outgoing and sometimes a little crazy. So travel grants us the opportunity to break the stereotypes created by mass media.
Secondly, travel boosts cultural communication in a more active way than books or videos. During travel, we can actively interact with local people and deeply experience their life, such as their dietary habit, peculiar customs and unique manners, while transmitting our own culture to those local people in the process of mutual exchanges. Obviously, it is not that easy for mass media to achieve such a direct and effective interaction.
To conclude苏小小是谁, although some mass media邓婵玉 , such as books, films or the Internet, play a necessary role in cultural exchange, traveling is of greater importance in order for us to personally experience the distinctive cultures and customs which may diverge from what we have acquired from mass media.

Online shopping is now replacing shopping in store. Do you think it is positive or negative development?(2017/11/11)
Shopping at home used to be a dream of ours, but now it has become a reality in our life thanks to the rapid development of the Internet. Many people today prefer online shopping rather than going to stores.
Online shopping has many advantages, especially when it is compared with the store shopping. Sitting comfortably at home, no matter how terrible the weather outside might be, and with a few simple clicks on our computer or smart phone screen, we can order almost everything we need from clothes to books and from electric appliances to air tickets. Then what we have to do is wait one or two days for the delivery of your order. The whole process is really easy and simple and thus can save us a lot of time, not to mention the reduced prices we often enjoy when we shop online.
Yet online shopping may create problems, too. First, as we cannot see the transaction going on with our own eyes, we may likely buy something that does not really suit us. We often hear our friends complain that they have to alter their expensive clothes bought online because it is too long or too short. To make it worse, to return our buy and get a different one is always a long and complicated process, which means we will lose the time we have gained from the online shopping. Secondly, unlike the store shopping, online shopping deprives us of the opportunities to spend a quality time together with our family members. I can still remember the excitement when my parents decided to take me to the supermarket to do the weekend shopping.
To sum up, the Internet does provide us with a new and convenient way of shopping, but we should not completely rely on it. We may opt for online shopping when it is necessary, yet I believe the brick and mortar stores will never be replaced by online stores because of the unique shopping experience they offer us.
